Space Ship
Space Station: A History of the First Interplanetary Space Ships by Robert Zimmerman, After losing the race to the moon, the Soviet Union responded by launching an ambitious program to build the first space stations. Leaving Earth is the definitive account of the human race's first tentative steps in the permanent habitation of space. The commander of the International Space Station's first crew, Bill Shepard, refers to his orbiting home as "Alpha." It is a moniker frowned upon by the Russians--and for good reason. It is not, as Shepard implies with his unofficial but inaccurate designation, the first space station. Not only did the Soviet Union successfully inhabit a series of six different Salyut space stations between 1971 and 1986, the Soviets maintained a human presence on Mir for more than 14 years. Indeed, the remarkable history explored in Leaving Earth makes it clear that the Soviet's vital and dynamic space program has ultimately surpassed our own comparatively tentative, tiptoeing efforts into the cosmos. Visionaries like Wernher von Braun and Willy Ley wrote in the 1950s that the first step in colonizing the heavens was the deployment of orbiting, self-sufficient "space stations." They certainly understood the dangers inherent in dealing with the harsh reality of a new and untested environment in which man was not a natural presence. The events that would follow in successive decades would prove that space was not always a hospitable home for human beings. Fraught with the potential for danger and occasionally punctuated by terrible moments of disaster, the history of space exploration has been keenly dramatic. But neither von Braun nor Ley--or for that matter NASA--dreamt that the ponderously bureaucratic Soviet Union would actually manage to overtake theUnited States in the space station race, leveraging its propaganda machine and tyrannical politics to launch a series of daring, dangerous, and scientifically brilliant space exploits that would put the Soviet Union far ahead of NASA.
Space Cat BLAM! WHOOSH! Space Cat blasts off in his rocket ship. With his trusty robot, Earl, along for the ride, adventure is sure to follow. Suddenly Space Cat's rocket ship is hit by a space rock. The fuel tank empties, forcing them to land on a strange new planet. Space Cat must find more fuel to get home, and the only creature on this strange planet who can help him is King Zorp, keeper of all the planet's fuel. But King Zorp isn't about to share any. How can Space Cat blast off again? Will he ever get home? The action -- and the humor -- never stops in this exciting intergalactic exploit starring a cosmic new hero.
Transport by sailing ship - Any ship is a total institution; a sailing ship on the open seas, being dependent on the winds, is especially isolated; in the age of sail, the technology of shipboard life and the lack of technology for communicating emergencies and of timely means of rescue made ships the probable epitome of the total-institution problem (with the most arguable alternative being space stations and outer-space exploration vehicles). Teenagers from Outer Space - Teenagers from Outer Space is a 1959 science-fiction B-movie about an extraterrestrial ship landing on Earth to use it as a farm for its food supply. The crew of the ship includes several teenagers (who ironically look quite old for teenagers), two of whom oppose each other in their activities. Space combat - Space combat is a game type that involves playing in a space environment, this environment can include an action based game such as any of the Rouge Squadron games; or a strategy based game such as Microsoft's Abandonware Allegiance. Typically these games include a type of ship, mounted with guns and/or missiles and other accessories. Hostile Space - Hostile Space is a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) that takes place in a vast persistent galaxy. Players take on the role of a star ship captain with goals including planetary exploration, mining, bounty hunting, smuggling goods, and taking on terrible space monsters.
